History of kina papua new guinea, useful information for tourists

National currency states of Papua New Guinea - kina. They have the international letter designation PGK, and the symbol "K". The kina is divided into 100 toya. The name of this currency is translated from the local language as "payment for food." The territory of the country was colonized by Germany, and later by Britain. So, during the years of colonization by the Germans as Money the local population used German marks. With the arrival of the British colonies in the country, the stamps were replaced by British pounds sterling. In addition to these currencies, the Australian pound has also been in circulation in Papua New Guinea, since 1906 and since 1914. In 1929, special pence and shilling coins were introduced for the Territory of New Guinea. The Japanese occupation did not pass without a trace, and a special pound was introduced in the country for its time. At the end of World War II, the Australian pound will be returned to Papua New Guinea. The national currency of the kina will be put into circulation only in 1975, after the state obtains the long-awaited independence. By January 1976, the Australian dollar will lose its solvency in the territory of independent Papua New Guinea. In April 2007, the 1 and 2 toya coins were withdrawn from circulation. Coins currently in circulation are in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 toya, as well as 1 and 2 kinas. Among paper money used banknotes of issues of different years since 1999. These are denominations of 2 kinas, 5 kinas, 10 kinas, 20 kinas, 50 kinas and 100 kinas. The design of the bills is interesting, colorful and has a variety of images that tell about the traditions and heritage of the inhabitants of Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea has the reputation of being almost the most expensive place on earth. According to all ratings and lists, life and travel in PNG is more expensive than in Europe, Australia or the United States. Not to mention Asia. The average tourist spends more than three hundred dollars a day in PNG!

What is the secret? Is everything really that expensive? In fact, the compilers of these ratings are the same kind of scientists who made Moscow the second most expensive city in the world, after Tokyo (and sometimes Moscow comes first!) Why? Because the ratings consider the cost of a very special life - taxi rides, living in multi-star hotels, dining in restaurants with waiters and wines, tours and trips organized by firms. In this regard, PNG is, of course, expensive.

The simplest bunkhouses (dormitory beds) cost no less than 50 kina ($20) per night; rare Internet cafes - 20-30 kinas (8-12 dollars) per hour; local flights - 300-800 kinas (120-320 dollars); meals in decent canteens where you can wash your hands (at hotels) start at 20 kin ($ 8) for a plate of rice; a glass of ice cream at Vanimo costs 6 kinas ($2.50) when available; and renting an apartment with electricity and a toilet in some shabby regional center costs more than renting the same apartment in Moscow. For all the civilized benefits listed above are available in PNG in very limited quantities, their prices are inflated - businessmen and foreigners are ready to pay ten times for the civilized services they are accustomed to and things they cannot do without.

On the other hand, everything that ordinary Papuans buy, that they use in their simple Papuan life, costs quite reasonable money. A bunch of a dozen bananas will cost 0.4-1 kinas (5-12 rubles), local canned fish - 1.5-2 kinas (18-23 rubles), a large plate of fried potatoes in the mountainous regional centers - 3-5 kinas (35-55 rubles) , 300 kilometers by bus along the main road - 50 kinas (600 rubles), which is quite comparable to the prices we are used to. At the same time, everything that a person needs (simple food, transport and lodging for the night) can get him for free, especially if the money has run out or thieves have stolen it.
So, let's remember: a decent European life is expensive, a simple Papuan life is cheap or completely free. Many Papuans do not have and do not use money at all, and, lo and behold, they live somehow!

The PNG currency is the Papuan Guinea kina (PGK). Banknotes are printed on plastic so that they do not get wet, and come in such nominations as 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 kina. On 20 kina a pig is drawn, on 50 kina the current (2011) Prime Minister Somare, on the others other national symbols. 1 kina - metal and with a hole. Metal pennies are called toya (toea) and are found in the form of 50, 20, 10 and 5 (rare). 1 Papuan kopeck has already disappeared from circulation. In conversation, locals often call kina “dollar”, thus expressing respect for it (after all, in all respected countries - in the USA, Australia and even in tiny Singapore - money is called “dollars”). If you are told the price of “fifty dolars” about some item or service, you should not always be scared - probably these are “dollars” of a local sample.

For spring-summer 2011, approx.

1 US$ = 1 AUSTR$ = 2.5 PGK,

1 PGK = 11.5 RUR (Russian rubles) = 3300 IDR (Indonesian rupees)

The Papua Guinea kina is not accepted for exchange anywhere else in the world, except for one exchanger in Jaipur. It is not accepted to pay in foreign currency in PNG. Accordingly, you need to take these kines somewhere.

In what form, in general, to import money into the country? For Papua New Guinea, there are three options.

1) The best place to buy kinas is in Jaipur. The exchanger (the only one identified, has been operating for many years) is located in Entrop, a suburb of Jaipur, Jalan Kelapa Dua Entrop, 4. Before conducting large-scale exchange operations, check the exchange rate and the availability of kin. You can also buy kinas at the border, but only on market days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). But this is only useful for those who enter from Jaipur.

2) Cash currency money is taken in the form american dollars, euros or Australian dollars and are exchanged for Papuan kinas in any regional center, in BSP (Bank Souht Pacific) or another bank, with a large margin. Indonesian rupiah does not change in PNG.

3) There are ATMs in all regional centers. Usually the ATM is located in the BSP bank and accepts only VISA cards. For each withdrawal operation, the bank charges you an additional fee of 15 kinas (apart from the usual fee, which is negotiated by your home bank and indicated in small letters in the contract). There is a BSP bank in every city - 35 branches in the country.

Supermarkets in some cities accept credit cards, but for each purchase, the bank may deduct an additional commission from you. Stock up on cash, and change large banknotes for small ones in advance in the city - rural Papuans usually do not have change.

You can sell the extra kins left after the trip with a loss of 10% in Jaipur or at the border, on market days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday).

It is a deep delusion to think that the country where everything is - Greece. Hellas, of course, is a respectable and pretty state, but she never dreamed of such the highest concentration of a little bit of everything in a limited area, which is observed in Papua New Guinea.

The country of the Papuans occupies one large island in half (the neighboring half is in Indonesia) and another 600 small islands - entirely. There are cities with high-rise buildings, but most of the republic is covered with virgin rainforest. Pale-faced scientists are not sure they know everything that grows, runs and flies in this forest. Rumors of encounters with unknown animals in New Guinea are as indestructible as in England - stories about ghosts.

The Papuans themselves have also been studied completely insufficiently. Not only their total number is not known for certain (the country's authorities estimate the number of their subjects at four million by eye), but even the number of languages in which these people communicate with each other. Experts counted 700 dialects in different parts of the archipelago, and God knows how many they didn’t count.

For all that, Papua New Guinea is still a modern state. Therefore, today it is not livestock and not the skulls of Christian missionaries that serve as money there, as you might have thought, but ordinary paper banknotes. Well, that is, not quite ordinary, but essentially similar to ours.

The local currency is called the kina (abbreviated designation - PGK). There is also a bargaining chip - toea. 1 kina is divided into 100 toea. Banknotes are in circulation in denominations of PGK50, 20, 10, 5 and 2, and metal coins are in denominations of 1 kina, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 toea.

There are also banks in this country, and local bankers and merchants know such advanced financial instruments as plastic cards and travelers checks. True, this is all in the cities. The further you go into the forest, where the Papuans preserve their traditional tribal lifestyle, the more unconditionally cash settlements give way to barter.

But in cities, banks change cash, service checks and credit cards (unfortunately, American Express is the most popular card here - not the most common among Russians). payment system). Jackson Field, an international airport located near the Papuan capital of Port Moresby, has an exchange office and a Duty Free shop.

The working day of banks lasts from 09:00 to 15:00 from Monday to Thursday. On Friday they work a little longer (until 17:00), and on Saturdays and Sundays they have a full weekend. Keep in mind that New Guinea celebrates a lot of different holidays: Easter, Christmas, the days of revered Christian saints, the birthday of the British Queen, Independence Day, and all sorts of local ones that have no analogues in Europe. Each such event serves as an excuse for bankers not to open their establishments.

And there is practically no black market in Papua. Local residents employed in the tourism industry sometimes charge in foreign currency, but they are reluctant to Australian dollars, with which the pockets of Russians are rarely burdened.

Traveler's checks are accepted by most shops and hotels (in cities, of course). Card payments are less common.

Inflation in New Guinea, although it takes place, does not reach the scale of a serious problem. The kina is gradually depreciating against the US dollar. Back in the middle of 1993, these two currencies were practically equal (the kina even cost a little more: 99 New Guinean kopecks were given for 1 dollar). To date, the exchange rate has slipped to PGK1.4225 per US$1.

Border currency control relatively soft, although there are still some limitations. Import from overseas foreign currency, and kinas can be in unlimited quantities. You can export back no more hard currency than it was imported. Therefore, although at the airport the border guards do not really insist on the execution of currency declarations, it is better to take care of this yourself in order to insure against misunderstandings on the way back. The export of the national Papuan currency is prohibited (although this rule is not observed too zealously).

Rather, problems may arise for those who like to carry all their home belongings with them abroad. In Papua, guests are expected to stay light. Every adult foreigner can import duty-free industrial goods with a total value of not more than PGK200 (young people under 18 - only PGK100). True, any expensive household appliances (radios, tape recorders, video recorders, video cameras, televisions and personal computers) are not counted in this amount.
