Log houses with a balcony are innovative projects and require special technological solutions. The design of such a cottage is more complicated. For its implementation, high-quality building materials are used. During further operation, a regular check of the strength of the frame is necessary.

Despite this, such cottages enjoy stable popularity. Their number is increasing every year.

In this article we will talk about houses with a balcony, discuss the features of their construction.

What project can be finalized to install a balcony?

The attic cannot be decorated with a balcony. This is related to the fact that attic floor not a major building. He himself is a superstructure over the main floor and is not able to provide the strength necessary for the installation of this architectural element.

The attic is able to withstand only a decorative balcony. You won't be able to get out. But it can be used to grow flowers.

Only a full-fledged two-story floor will become a reliable support. Its walls are able to withstand an additional weight of several hundred kilograms.

Features of the construction of houses with balconies

Profiled timber is quite suitable for the construction of such houses. When ordering a wooden cottage, you need to remember the following features:

  • Careful choice of installation site.

It is best if this structural element is installed on the second floor and it will come out of the bedroom. It is important that a good view opens from it, then it will be especially pleasant to go out into the fresh air.

  • Calculation of strength and heat loss.

Even a decorative balcony needs additional calculations of the strength of the frame of the house and heat loss. It is not uncommon to have to choose between a good view from above or a warm building. Therefore, in cottages for permanent residence there are rarely such architectural elements.

  • Combination with other structural elements.

The balcony should be combined with a veranda, terrace or other elements that are in the design. Otherwise, it will look like a foreign body, and disfigure the appearance of the entire building.

Times are changing, building materials are improving, and houses with balconies remain one of the most sought-after options. suburban construction. At timber houses with balconies special aesthetics and energy. They fit perfectly into the country landscape and allow you to enjoy magnificent views while sitting comfortably in the fresh air.

Features of the construction of houses with a balcony

  • It is necessary to carefully choose a place for a balcony. If it goes out onto the roadway or rests against a neighbor's window, you are unlikely to use it.
  • The balcony increases the consumption of materials and the cost of construction. When designing, it is necessary to take into account additional heat losses and the load on the foundation.
  • The balcony needs strong support. Its base is a carrier plate, which is attached to the wall of the house or installed on additional supports.

When designing a house with a balcony, it is extremely important to correctly calculate the load. Trust the design and construction of such a house is only for professionals.

For city dwellers, whose everyday life is at a crazy pace and constant tension, a country house is by no means a luxury, but the best way to relieve stress and restore lost energy. And if the site is not just country house with amenities in the yard, and, for example, a spacious house with a balcony and a terrace, outdoor recreation becomes doubly pleasant.

With the help of the video in this article, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the proposals of designers presenting interesting, and sometimes unexpected solutions. We will comment on the options presented, and at the same time we will try to convince you that a do-it-yourself terrace on a small balcony is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

The terrace is a landscaped area, and it can be located at any level: encircle the house along the perimeter, be combined with a porch or balcony, or even sit on the roof. Depending on this, materials for its lining are also selected.

For example, a terrace in front of a balcony can rest on a foundation, and its flooring can be made either in a frame way or be a concrete surface lined with stone or tile. The arrangement of all other options depends on what materials the structures are made of, which will serve as the basis for the terrace.

Built-in terraces

If the terrace is located on the second floor, then the base under it will most likely be wooden. In private houses you will not see such a balcony, which we are used to seeing in high-rise buildings, where a concrete slab, pinched at one end, is installed between the ceilings.

By definition, if a balcony does not have a departure beyond the bearing walls, but it is located on a common floor with a living space, then this is no longer a balcony, a loggia.

  • In principle, this is the same as the terrace, only the latter is usually more spacious in size. Which term to use doesn't really matter. Most of us call such structures a balcony, regardless of whether they are built-in or remote - although, of course, they are structurally different.
  • In private houses, including block and brick ones, beam ceilings are popular, as they have less weight, as well as simpler installation technology for self-execution. It is on such an overlap that the terrace on the second floor rests, if it is provided for by the project.

  • Above is a project of a house with two terraces, one of which is located at the entrance, and the second is directly above it, on the second level. They are built into the perimeter of the house, and the ceiling separating them serves as a canopy for one terrace, and a supporting base for another. Accordingly, the upper terrace is under a common roof with the house.

We think it is clear to everyone that houses with balconies and terraces located on an exploited roof are built only according to the project, since all loads are preliminarily calculated in it, and materials are correctly selected. Even if the construction is carried out on its own, such structural elements of the building must be provided in advance.

Remote structures

To an already operated house, you can only make an extension, and it may well even be two-story. For example, on the first floor you can make a glazed veranda (see), and on the second - an open area where you can sunbathe. Only it is better to make the entrance to it not from home, but from the street - do not break through bearing wall in order to be able to leave the premises on the attached terrace.

So:

  • In principle, an extension can be made from any material - here you need to consider what the walls of the house are built from. If they are wooden, then brick or stone pillars or walls will look at least funny. But the tree is suitable for building an extension to any house: even a log one, even a brick one - it’s easier to work with it, the price of the building is lower.

  • Metal structures look just as good., which you can see by looking at the photo presented as an example. For the construction of the extension frame, you can use steel rolled metal, and then veneer it with polyurethane stucco molding. You can also use an aluminum facade system with glazing, or install the original awning. As you can see, there are many ways to equip a terrace.

Note! When it comes to terraces on the second floor, designers often offer built-in options. From a constructive point of view, they are more harmonious, and more convenient for the inhabitants of the house, as they are under a common roof with it. Remote balconies and terraces do not have a roof, and are designed only in those houses where a mezzanine is provided.

  • A mezzanine is a small superstructure on the roof. It decorates the house very much, and it looks best when a balcony adjoins it. In this case, it cannot be built-in in any way, since the mezzanine itself stands out from the general contour of the roof. On the project presented above, we see an option with a remote, and quite spacious terrace, the protruding edge of which rests on pillars.

On the ground floor, almost along the entire perimeter of the facade, there is also a terrace here. It is clear that all this is designed and built along with the house. But for those who are interested in how to build a terrace adjoining an existing building, we can give a lot of useful recommendations.

How to add a terrace to the house

If an extension to the second floor creates certain problems due to the arrangement of the exit, and may simply be impossible, then making a terrace adjoining the first floor is not particularly difficult.

Foundation arrangement

Most lucky are those on whose plot there is dense and dry soil, or the area around the house is concreted. In this case, you don’t have to make a foundation for the terrace, but you can get by with adjustable supports installed under the logs.

  • They perfectly distribute the load on the frame, moreover, each of the supports is able to withstand up to one ton of weight by itself. Both their design and the possibility of installing overhead elements allow you to raise the terrace to the desired height, adjust the slope of its surface, and also compensate for some terrain errors.

  • If the base is fairly even, and the terrace does not need to be raised high, ordinary concrete blocks can also be used as supports for the logs. Like any other supports, they are installed at a distance of 40-50 cm from each other, and the horizontal surface is leveled.
  • In the diagram below, you can clearly see how the subsystem of the terrace, based on concrete blocks, is arranged. For this purpose, you can take products of the smallest format, but preferably full-bodied. Variants of cellular concrete, which, as you know, strongly absorb moisture, should not be used, but concrete blocks with light aggregates are what you need.

  • In any case, drainage preparation is made under them in the form of crushed stone or sand and gravel bedding. It is advisable to treat the blocks themselves with water-repellent impregnation before installation. Logs, as well as, can be made from both solid natural wood and wood-polymer composite.

Note! A distinctive feature of the composite is the presence of polymer resins in its composition, which make the products practically impervious to moisture. In addition, both the logs and the board have a hollow structure and longitudinal grooves, which facilitates the outflow of water from the structures during rain. If the terrace does not rise high, that is, its surface will be in close proximity to the ground surface, we recommend giving preference to the wood-polymer option.

  • Terraces on adjustable and other surface supports are collapsible. But you can also attach a capital terrace to the house - such, for example, as in the photo above. When it is built along with the house, it has a common foundation with it. If an extension is being made, then a separate foundation will have to be poured under the terrace (see), close to the existing foundation of the house, but without direct adjacency to it.
  • Its basement can be lined in the same way as it is done on the house - and the impression of the integrity of the structure will be created. Perhaps pouring the foundation tape will seem expensive to you, or the landscape of the site does not allow it. In this case, you can give preference to a columnar or pile foundation.

  • If there is a protruding plinth from the side of the house, on which the terrace framing beams can be supported, then you just need to install 4-6 point supports. They can be laid out from the same concrete blocks, bricks, or rubble stone. Piles can be used screw, or they can be made according to Tise technology: install asbestos-cement pipes in the drilled holes and fill them with concrete.
  • Columnar and pile foundations especially useful when it is necessary to put vertical supports under a canopy for a terrace. Embedded parts are embedded in the foundation, which will hold vertical racks from a bar or channel, or install rod metal elements, which will allow the construction of brick columns supporting.

  • The flooring of the capital terrace can also be framed. In principle, this is the only option convenient for execution when the structure has to be raised high relative to the ground surface. But if this is not required, then under the terrace you can do slab foundation, and then revet it with tiles or stone.

Embedded parts can also be installed in a monolithic slab, allowing you to mount vertical elements. But if necessary, separate columnar supports can also be provided under the canopy racks. Here, as in mathematics: the ways of solving the problem can be different, and the result in any case depends on the initial data.

Strapping and canopy

It is clear that laying several beams on columnar supports is easier than concreting and waiting for almost a month until it will be possible to continue work - and such construction is much cheaper. Therefore, attached terraces, even capital ones, most often have a frame structure.

  • What are its features? If the foundation for the terrace is made columnar, then in order to mount the logs, you will definitely have to tie the perimeter of the flooring. It makes it possible to tie together point supports, to stiffen the frame of the future terrace. The strapping also prevents the foundation from moving during shrinkage - and this is especially important where the soil is unstable.

  • When a capital terrace is being built, on which there can be superstructures in the form of a gazebo, a summer kitchen, or a glazed veranda, then metal-roll can be used for tying, and for installing vertical elements. But if it's just flooring, which will have a maximum of two pillars for a canopy, it is better to use wood - for example: well-dried pine timber with a section of 100 * 100 mm.
  • The fact is that when arranging point foundations with metal strapping, the distances between the supports have to be reduced. This makes construction more expensive, as more supports must eventually be made. Strange as it may seem, there are no such problems with wood: it is much lighter than metal, and does not bend so much under its own weight.
  • Make a binding and strip foundation, only structurally it may differ slightly. In this case, the logs can be supported directly on the foundation. At the same time, the strapping no longer connects the supports, but the elements of the decking frame. But in any case, it must be firmly fixed to the foundation.

  • As for the extension, it doesn’t matter: it’s a terrace, a veranda, or a porch, then the strapping is also fastened to the supporting structures of the house: a basement or a wall. Between themselves, all elements of the frame, both horizontal and vertical, are connected by grooving, as shown in the picture above, or by installing connecting consoles.
  • As an additional fastener, wooden or metal plates, corners, clamps can be used. The upper trim is performed in the same way - if the terrace is equipped with a canopy. In the simplest version, this is a shed roof. Its slope is formed by installing a ridge run to the wall of the house, just above the level of the upper trim.
  • If desired, on the terrace you can make not just a canopy, but a full-fledged gable, or even a hip roof - the main thing is to deal with the truss system. But, unfortunately, it is impossible to tell about everything at once within the limits of one article.
