Design is a highly demanded and rapidly developing field. Despite this, it can be difficult for a designer to find a job, as competition is high. This problem is faced by professionals living in both large and small cities. However, this does not mean that you need to give up your profession. The problem is completely solved freelance for designers.

The benefits of freelancing for designers

Freelancing gives design professionals the widest opportunities:

  • control over your own time. You can decide what hours are convenient for you to work. You can combine remote work with the main one. This gives maximum freedom;
  • benefits. The economic benefits will be substantial. You can select projects that are completely satisfying in terms of cost, determine the price of your services without wasting your talent on low-paying projects. Due to the fact that it is possible to simultaneously fulfill several orders at once, the payment, as a rule, is higher than that of full-time employees;
  • freedom of choice. The specialist can choose projects that are of interest to him. This allows you to do what is really interesting. In addition, it becomes possible to take on different projects, thereby expanding the scope of their interests and the level of professionalism.

Thus, freelancing allows the designer to make excellent money doing what he knows and loves. You don't have to follow someone else's schedule. You can plan the day at your own discretion, but at the same time get a good salary.

Why choose a freelance site site?

This article is devoted to one of the areas of modern freelancing - the design of construction projects. Since the article and the topic are trial in this direction, it will highlight the author's experience as a design engineer, the main problems that arise in the work, and the prospects for the development of this direction on freelance. Everything described in this article is solely the personal opinion of the author, which is based on the level of his competence in this area, and experience in the field of construction.

Nowadays, when a person hears about freelancing, first of all, such things as programming, administration, copyright, translations come to his mind - professions that are somehow connected with modern Internet and IT technologies. The author of this article is not a freelancer in any of the above areas.

On the contrary, I would like to talk about one of the areas of freelancing, the volume of projects of which is not so high, but I believe that the prospects for growth and development of this area are very high.

In June 2012, I graduated from the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering with a degree in Information Systems and technologies in construction. He started his freelance career in the 5th year of university in 2011, when he entered a permanent job as an engineer in a company engaged in the design and installation of low-voltage systems in the construction of buildings and structures. From that moment on, my freelancing career began.

First steps in freelancing

The direction in design that I have chosen is low-voltage systems, which include fire alarms, fire automatics, warning and evacuation control systems in case of fire, fire extinguishing (gas, powder, water mist), security alarm and communication systems (structured cabling and telephone systems).
To begin with, freelancing was not a means of earning money for me, but a means of improving my skills and gaining additional experience. As resources for finding potential customers, I used the most popular sites on this topic: FL.ru, Freelance.ru, Avito, NN.HH.ru. The first orders and customers were financially of little interest, but from the point of view of a long-term perspective and gaining experience, they completely suited me. Naturally, I didn’t even think about large projects, but regular and additional work brought good experience and knowledge. One of my advantages was that I managed to find a balance between practice, that is, direct participation in the construction of facilities, and design, the bulk of which was freelance.
One of the main difficulties for a novice freelancer is always attracting the first customers and developing a customer base. My first clients were small construction organizations that had no designers in my field on a permanent basis, which in the future could give permanent orders.
During the first year, I managed to establish cooperation with 4-5 construction companies, which later began to contact me on an ongoing basis. I should note that for a novice freelancer who does not yet have sufficient professional experience, it is very important to show the most loyal attitude towards the customer (of course, within reasonable limits). In my work, I always stay in touch, I never charge extra for minor alterations, and I provide advice to construction workers.

I consider it very important at the first stage of work to sacrifice some financial ambitions for the sake of experience and entry into the profession.

Design and freelance. Is it compatible?

Unlike the IT industry, construction is a delicate topic. Mistakes in construction should not lead to consequences that in the future can bring great losses, both financial and humanitarian. Based on the foregoing, I draw only one conclusion that many mistakes during construction can be avoided at the design stage. Of course, freelancing design to a certain extent increases the likelihood of errors. In the foreground, I would like to highlight two parties: the customer and the contractor. On the part of the customer, it is important to build relationships with the contractor in such a way as to maximize the level of responsibility of the contractor.

The most common and easiest way is to build a payment system in which the contractor receives an advance payment to start work, and the balance is transferred only when the documentation, for example, passes all the necessary approvals (state examination project documentation, departmental examination of working documentation, etc.). Another option for design quality control is to have an employee on the customer's staff who is able to supervise and oversee the design that a freelancer or a group of freelancers is doing. In my practice, both of the options I described have a place to be.

The option in which the customer simply orders the project and, without checking it, pays for all the work to the contractor at once, we do not consider, although this is also observed.

It is obvious that on the part of the freelancer, personal qualities come to the fore, driving the performer to perform his work qualitatively and responsibly, when not only the goals of earning are put in the foreground, but also the receipt of a high-quality and working project.

Also, one of the important causes of design errors is the abstract representation of designers about what they are developing. More specifically, the lion's share of designers never visit construction sites and do not take any part in the production process. But at the stage of construction of an object of any scale, issues related to the developed project regularly arise, and it is important for the designer to be directly involved in solving these issues. The participation of the designer in the process of construction work is the most invaluable practical experience, better than which it is difficult to imagine. If it is definitely easier for a full-time designer to do this, then what about a freelance designer who has a permanent job and works only on weekends and evenings? Personally, I solved this problem like this. My main place of work is more related to the production of works, less to the design. That is, at my main place of work, I am a construction participant, although I also regularly have to develop projects. At the same time, as a freelancer, I have a constant flow of projects from completely different cities, to which, if necessary, I had to travel.

Thus, I consider the combination of practice (construction) and theory (design) to be the most optimal combination, in which the number of design errors can be minimized.

Answering the question about the compatibility of design and freelancing, I will answer that with a competent and responsible approach to work on the part of both the customer and the contractor, you can achieve results no less successful than having an ordinary designer on staff.

Work at present. conclusions

Currently, I have managed to achieve a constant flow of projects, about 2-3 projects per month on average. For 4.5 years of work, I have completed about 60 projects of various sizes and purposes, including industrial buildings. In the last 1.5 years, large projects began to appear on freelance, such as industrial enterprises, municipal facilities, etc. This fact indicates the desire of customers to work with freelance designers on large facilities, and the potential for freelance development in this direction.

I believe that freelancing as such is not and cannot be the reason for the low quality of design, I see the main reason for this problem as incorrect and unprofessional relationships between freelance designers and customers in the development of design and working documentation.

The designer can not only work for a certain company, but also take remote orders and work on creating his own name. Distant work is beneficial for both the employee and the client: the employer receives a specialist to perform large works in a short time, and the contractor independently determines the type and volume of work performed.

  • 1 5 Reasons Freelance Designers Are Employed
  • 2 Disadvantages of freelancing for designers
  • 3 Signs of a reliable remote designer

5 Reasons Freelance Designers Are Hiring

Remote work is mostly associated with designers, journalists, and copywriters, but designers, accountants, and engineers also have a lot to learn from freelancing.

Reasons for the departure of design engineers into free swimming:

  1. Having one-sided personal growth- An engineer working with one company faces typical organizational problems when working on various projects.
  2. Lack of prospects for rapid expansion of professional opportunities- a freelance engineer can simultaneously be a designer, and a teacher, and a marketer, and a foreman, while an engineer assigned to it by an organization has to act only within the limits of his job capabilities. Remote work allows the engineer to do both consulting and design.
  3. The desire to fully and painlessly control one's own professional activity - remote work is a way to acquire freedom, flexibility and the necessary time reserves for the development of indirect professional skills. The freelance sphere requires from the designer not only professional skills, but also negotiation skills, basic knowledge in marketing and sales, the ability to develop personal branding, etc.
  4. Having conflicts with superiors- freelancing is characterized by the absence of bosses - the client is a partner or counterparty, and not the boss of the contractor. The engineer can choose the projects he would like to design and assign his own amount for the amount of work performed.
  5. Lost love for my work- the designer considers his duties in the organization boring, monotonous and uninteresting, therefore he is looking for personal development in the field of freelancing.

Freelancing Disadvantages for Designers

A designer who goes freelance is waiting for freedom, personal development and a lot of free time. But, like other types of employment, freelancing has its own significant drawbacks.

Working for yourself has the following negative aspects:

  • Lack of a regular and fixed flow of finance- payment depends on the quantity and quality of work performed. Remote work does not provide a guarantee of full and timely payment the labor of the designer, therefore, situations with financial fraud of unscrupulous customers often occur.
  • The need for constant self-development- Freelancing is considered a competitive environment, where an engineer must know the main trends and new technologies in order to secure stable orders.
  • Lack of security- after leaving the main job and going freelance, the engineer does not receive paid sick leave and vacations, and also does not have insurance.
  • Lack of constant close contact with colleagues- remote work allows the designer to keep in touch with colleagues on forums and in comments to orders, however, this method of communication is not always convenient and reflects all the needs of the designer in professional communication.
  • The need to provide yourself with a cozy, quiet and comfortable workplace- an engineer who was attracted distant work must take care of the organization of comfortable working conditions.
  • Direct dependence of income level from talent, perseverance and diligence - designing will bring the desired profit to the engineer only if remote work is regular and long-term.
  • The need to organize a personal stabilization fund before leaving the main job - remote work cannot immediately become profitable, so the engineer must prepare in advance the amount to cover the minimum expenses for six months.
  • The problem of constant search for customers- an engineer must constantly "hunt" for potential customers on special exchanges, in social networks or through acquaintances, so as not to remain broke.

Signs of a reliable remote designer

The private customer prefers to work with proven and conscientious performer who will deliver quality work on time. A reliable designer has the following features:

  • The presence of an extensive portfolio with high-quality and interesting projects.
  • The presence of recommendations or letters of thanks/reviews from previous customers.
  • Reasoned price claims - if the designer requires a 50% advance payment or overstates the cost of his work by several times, then his position should be justified by the specifics of working on a particular project.
  • By the absence of automatic replies under every collaboration offer, a reliable designer will give away their interest with professional questions or suggestions, not spam.

A freelance designer is, by default, a freelancer who works on interesting projects and has plenty of personal time. However, there is also the other side of the coin, which is the constant search for clients, the need to work on your name and constantly develop.
