Review of the PayPal payment system. What are the advantages of PayPal over banks and payment systems? Paypal cons

This is an electronic payment system with the longest history of existence and the largest number of users worldwide. Nine out of ten online stores make payments exclusively through PayPal.

PayPal's electronic payment system links a virtual account to a credit card or bank account - it is the only system that truly transfers money rather than electronic payment units.

The main operating principle of this system is safety. The system guarantees the safety of accounts, but creates a lot of inconvenience for users in that the slightest suspicion of dishonest actions by a client causes an immediate blocking of the account.

History of the payment system

The world's oldest electronic payment system was founded in 1998 in the USA by economist Peter Thiel, entrepreneur Luke Nosek and Russian-born programmer Max Levchin.

Confinity was created to carry out money transfers via mobile devices. The need for such a product in the market was colossal and Confinity immediately received huge investments of about 4.5 million US dollars from Nokia Ventures and Deutsche Bank.

In 1999, Confinity merged with X.com, an Internet financial services company. The new company name is PayPal Ink.

The official PayPal website began working with clients in February 2000. The Internet is developing rapidly, with many paid services and virtual stores appearing. The electronic payment system attracts huge investments - $23 million. Already in June of the same year, PayPal had 1.5 million customers and a daily turnover of 2 million US dollars per day. It is also important to understand

In February 2002, the corporation issued shares worth a total of $900 million on the US securities market.

In October 2002, the payment system was acquired by eBay Inc for $1.5 billion.

PayPal today

Today, PayPal is the world's largest electronic payment system; in 2006, transactions worth $11 billion were made in the system - it currently has no competitors.

  • 9/10 of all online stores make their payments via PayPal.
  • PayPal has more than 20 different categories, including “Best Financial Website” (2006) and “Britain's Most Popular Financial Portal” (2009).
  • PayPal's coverage area is 190 countries. The peculiarity of the system is that the payment system services are different in each country. The entire range of EPS services is available only to users from the USA, Western Europe, Canada, China and Australia.
  • In 2007, payment system services became available to clients from the CIS countries: Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
  • The company's website offers customers a choice of languages: English, Chinese, Spanish, French and Russian.

Payment currencies in PayPal

At the time of the company’s founding, payments in the system were made only in USD-dollars. Today, payments in the system are made in a number of currencies: euro, Canadian, New Zealand, Singaporean and Australian dollars, pound sterling, yen, yuan, Czech, Danish and Norwegian krone, Polish zloty, Swiss franc and . you can do it in dozens of different ways, but only a few are available in Russia so far.

What are the financial activities of this system?

A PayPal customer links a bank account or card to an email ID - this is their email address. After registering in the system, the client can make electronic payments.

The minimum amount for a transaction in this payment system is 1 US dollar. Clients of the system from the CIS countries can have a limited amount of no more than 500 US dollars on their account.

PayPal users in America can send money instantly to PayPal via SMS. This service will soon be available worldwide.

PayPal is the only one in the world that deals with real “live” money, so the security system instantly reacts to the slightest violation of the rules for transferring funds.

The funds that the client enters into the payment system are deposited in Wells Fargo bank accounts. The insurance company SafeWeb Insurance insures the risk of clients withdrawing from their account without authorization more than 100 thousand USD.

The administration of the payment system recognizes only verified client accounts as trustworthy when all bank account data has been entered in full. Such accounts have minimal restrictions from PayPal security, which regularly blocks suspicious accounts.

This system even has its own Wall of Shame on the network, where users of the system share their outrage at the actions of the security service to freeze accounts.

PayPal Services and Accounts

  1. Electronic payment (sending). Transfer of a sum of money from a personal PayPal account, bank or card account verified in the system.
  2. Request to debtors to transfer funds. The user sends letters to debtors urging them to make payments.
  3. Placing payment instruments on the website. The service is available to Premier and Business account holders.
  4. Auction payments.
  • automated mailing that requests payment;
  • You can pay with PayPal for purchases made at online auctions.

The electronic payment system offers its clients a choice of three types of accounts.

  1. Personal account. Account for personal use - transfers to loved ones, clients, payment for purchases only within the system. Account limit is $500 per month. An unverified account opened in Russia or Ukraine is limited to $100 per month. An account opened in the USA has no restrictions.
  2. Premier account. Designed for the turnover of amounts exceeding the personal account limit. Allows you to make PayPal payments to your account from credit cards; it is possible to integrate the account with the site.
  3. Business account. Opens for financial activities of companies. Has the details of the company, its logo and functions on its behalf. To open a business account, a company must have a taxpayer registration number.

Russians use a limited range of services from this system:

  1. Making electronic payments via PayPal from bank and card accounts.
  2. Accepting payments - the service has been available only since 2011. Amounts deposited into your PayPal email account cannot be withdrawn to your bank account or card. The money can only be spent on paying for Internet purchases.

Payments are made in rubles, all information is in Russian-language format.

To become a client of the PayPal electronic payment system, you just need to go through a simple registration procedure in the system. The identifier will be the email address.

The security system requires entering complete information about the client. Verification of the account in the system is carried out only after complete entry of all information about the account. At the time of verification, there should be an amount of about $3 on the card - a membership fee for verification of $1.95 and a symbolic amount of $1, which will be returned after registering an account in the system.

In Russia, there is a service - selling a Paypal virtual card with a certain amount in the account, for example, in QIWI terminals. Such a card does not require entering personal account information into the system. It is not recommended to keep large sums on such a card - unverified card data is quickly calculated and blocked by the Paypal security system. In this case, it will be impossible to receive the money remaining on the card.

Advantages and Disadvantages of PayPal

The main advantages of the system are:

  • reliability and high level of security;
  • ubiquity;
  • ease of use - the identifier is an email address;
  • fast and simple calculations;
  • the system withdraws money directly from a bank (or card) account.

Flaws:

  1. Users of the system in Russia and the CIS countries have a limited personal account limit of about $500. Of the system’s range of services, only payments within the system and payments for online purchases are actually available.
  2. Money in system accounts is not converted into electronic currencies.
  3. The security system has the unlimited right to block electronic accounts.

So, let's summarize and highlight the basic principles of operation of this system:

  1. PayPal is an electronic payment system.
  2. This system is the oldest and most widespread in the world.
  3. System users have the opportunity to make cash payments directly from their bank account linked to an account in the PayPal payment system. The system transfers real money, not electronic analogues. The funds are kept in the bank.
  4. 9 out of 10 online stores around the world make payments via PayPal. The system is distributed in 190 countries.
  5. Russian users of the system (as well as most CIS countries) through PayPal can only make payments within the system and in online stores. The amount on the account is limited to $500.

PayPal is one of the best payment instruments (payment systems) on the Internet. PayPal is designed for paying bills and purchases, as well as sending and receiving money online by individuals and legal entities.

Millions of people around the world use PayPal. To pay, you only need to have an email address and password, which is very convenient.

The features of this payment system and its advantages include:

  1. It is possible to pay for goods without commission.
  2. Paypal guarantees that the item will be delivered(the money will become available to the seller only after confirmation of delivery).
  3. Paypal allows you to start a “dispute” with the seller about problems with your order.

History of creation

PayPal Inc. was founded through a merger of other companies in 2000. An aggressive policy of attracting users (paying up to $20 per user) led to the fact that in April 2000, 1 million sellers on eBay accepted payment using PayPal.

The founders of the business are Ken Howery, Luke Nozek, Max Levchin (born in Kiev in 1975, moved to the USA, where he graduated from the University of Illinois), Elon Musk (also known as the founder of SpaceX and Tesla Motors) and Peter Thiel. In 2002, eBay acquired Paypal for $1.5 billion.

In 2011, Paypal changed its status for users in Russia. It has become possible to top up your Paypal account using a bank card, and since September 2013, you can use rubles and withdraw funds from Paypal without commission to your account in a Russian bank.

Registration with Paypal is described in detail in this article. Before starting your free registration, you need to know the following:

  • All countries in this payment system are divided into groups. Russia belongs to a group in which a one-time payment can currently be up to 15,000 rubles, and the monthly payment limit is 40,000 rubles.
  • For CIS countries, the group level is lower and the limits are smaller.
  • Before registering, you need to pay attention to the fact that you can top up your account only from a plastic card attached to it.

Registration begins with selecting the country and interface language. Next, you need to determine the type of account in Paypal:

  • For business (i.e. for sellers).
  • For buyers.

Then real personal data is entered in a special form. Paypal's verification methods will most likely render your account inaccessible due to incorrect or fictitious information, so please enter your real information.

Unblocking is possible only upon receipt of a letter with further instructions. They try to fake such letters for phishing and theft of funds, so you should carry out all your actions from the Paypal website, and not from links in the letter.

The login to enter the system is your e-mail. It is recommended to create a separate mailbox for working with Paypal, which will reduce the likelihood of attacks on your Paypal account using the mailbox name. To restore access to your Paypal account, it is optimal to use a mobile phone, so Paypal requests your number during registration.

It is not necessary to link a plastic card when registering with Paypal; this can be done later. In any case, the link will require entering card data, including the confirmation code from the back of the plastic card.

Confirmation of the right to an account is done after a letter from Paypal arrives at the specified email address. Confirmation of the linked card is a separate procedure. And only after its completion, the card becomes linked and can be used in this system. Checking the card is done as follows:

  • A small amount (up to $2) is withdrawn from it, which will then be returned to the card or Paypal account.
  • Confirmation by the user of this withdrawal serves as verification of the card linked to the account.

Paypal commission

Before describing, let's list the commissions:

  1. Payment for purchases in Russia is free. Commission of 4% only when converting rubles into foreign currency for purchases abroad (if the seller does not agree to pay the commission).
  2. In case of personal money transfer in Russia using a PayPal account, no commission is charged.
  3. A commission of 3.4% of the transferred amount plus 10 rubles is charged. for each transaction when using a bank card. But it is possible to choose who pays the commission: the one who sends the transfer or the one who receives it.
  4. When transferring money abroad, an additional commission to the previous points is charged from 0.4% to 1.5% (depending on the country of destination).

You can save on commissions if currency conversion is performed at the bank that issued the card.

What is a Dispute in Paypal?

This payment system gives 45 days for the possible initiation of a “dispute” with the seller regarding improper execution of the order (including product quality or non-delivery). This means high protection against fraud, and if Paypal was used for a purchase on eBay, a guarantee of the entire transaction.

When a “dispute” is opened, the seller’s account will be blocked and the money will be returned over time, and if the unscrupulous seller disappears, Paypal itself will issue a refund.

Secrets and features of using Paypal

When using this payment system, the quality of the customer-oriented interface is impressive. To purchase goods in an online store or at an eBay auction, you must indicate that payment is made using Paypal and enter your Paypal registration data (login and password). Confirmation of payment, after carefully reviewing the information provided on the screen for this purchase, will result in the payment being processed.

For greater security, you can make payments from the Paypal website. To do this, on the “Send Funds” tab, you must fill out the form without errors with information about the recipient and the payment amount. The recipient is also identified by his login (his email).

On the next page you can check everything and, if necessary, enter a discount code, change the conversion method, write a message to the recipient with private information. Further, after sending (the “Send funds” button) and refreshing the page (it may take a long time), the payment will be completed.

Changing the conversion method (so that instead of Paypal, this action is assigned to the bank that issued the card) can be easily configured in the profile, including for all subsequent operations.

It remains to consider how to top up your Paypal account and how to transfer money to Paypal. Replenishment of the account is possible only from a linked plastic card, by exchanging other electronic money or as a result of receiving funds by the seller. How to profitably exchange electronic money, read here.

In Russia, sellers focus mainly on domestic electronic money and payment systems. But over time, the number of merchants accepting payments via Paypal will only grow. Perhaps this will be facilitated by a device such as “PayPal Here” (introduced in March 2012). It allows you to pay with a plastic card via a smartphone on the iOS or Android platform. PayPal commission – 2.7% of the payment.

The convenience of electronic payments, the speed of transactions and loyal conditions for newly connected clients in just a few months allowed us to attract hundreds of thousands of new users to the system. And the start of servicing the already popular eBay auction predetermined the future success of the service. The record growth in popularity of this payment system led to the fact that already in 2002 the owner of PayPal Inc. became eBay.

It is impossible to convert funds, but it is possible to transfer from a ruble wallet to a dollar wallet without commission, according to Paypal tariffs, that is, if you transfer 1 dollar from a ruble account to a dollar account, then rubles will be debited from you, and dollars will come in, and if you withdraw dollars to ruble card, they are automatically converted into rubles at the rate of your bank.

When a user chooses an electronic payment system, he wants to know in advance about the pitfalls. In this article, we have specifically collected the most useful reviews about PayPal for those who want to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the system. This information will be more useful than advertising texts on the main pages. To give you your impression of PayPal, what it is and how to use it - reviews from real people, collected by us from several sites. We invite you to check it out!

Impressions from work: easy and fast!

I started using the service without delving into the intricacies, because I only made payments in online stores. Over time, I figured out the possibilities, fortunately the site pleased me with its accessible interface. I found the answer to many questions by studying the sections, and now I am actively making purchases.

Why did I switch to PayPal? Some stores did not accept webmoney, but I wanted to contact not only Greenmama, Ozon or Aliexpress. After registering, I then mastered Buyincoins; Initially, the money was withdrawn from the linked card, but later a decent cash back in the form of interest on purchases accumulated at your favorite store. To make the task easier, and soon made the payment! You can choose the appropriate currency, but I don’t always calculate the benefits - what’s more important is the ability to buy what you want.

Unreliable system

For those looking to use PayPal, reviews may seem like a guarantee of good work. I fell for the bait too, so I say: be careful! I often buy from UK eBay and lose money due to problems with the system.

Once I won an auction, but the price dropped too much and the seller did not send the goods. To get the funds back (this is called unclaimed money), I did everything as advised in the description. Nothing came, I sent a request, and in response they said to wait. I waited and waited, the amount was not returned, new requests were not answered.

A recent example: money was withdrawn 2 times for a purchased item. I wrote a request, indicated nicknames and transaction number, but there was no result. I started calling, Russian support did not answer, and in the end I spent money talking to Luxembourg, because the pleasure is paid. I can give several more cases, but there is only one conclusion: the service is bad. The advantages (speed and convenience) do not compensate for the unreliability and terrible service.

The only system that reimburses stolen funds!

I used the site for a long time to transfer money to my husband’s foreign account, but then I decided to pay for everything myself. I chose the product, gave the seller my email address, after which he asked for a phone number, supposedly for delivery. The next day, another $10 was withdrawn from the account, and a record appeared that I had made a donation. , not counting on a quick result, but in the evening I received an answer. The $10 was returned: the withdrawal turned out to be unauthorized.

I waited a week for the goods to be sent, tried to contact, there was no response. When I realized that I couldn’t see the goods, I applied again. They told me that they wrote a message to the seller and took control of the situation. Soon they decided in my favor, and everything was back on the card! I found a new product and am waiting for the parcel.

Buyer protection is a fiction!

Not without its shortcomings, after all. I use the services of different banks, so I am happy to share my experience:

  • First you need to make sure that there are funds on the card. After registration, a small amount (less than 100 rubles) is withdrawn 2 times, which is later returned.
  • You can link personal accounts, not correspondent accounts. Therefore, a credit card from Tinkoff Bank did not work, but a debit card did!
  • PayPal does not cooperate with Pioneer and Kukuruza. I asked questions to Pioneer representatives, and they reported that there were no restrictions on their part. Later it turned out that the payment system refused to cooperate.
  • I had mixed impressions from Russian Standard; after linking the card, the bank was very disappointing. Electronic payments went through, but when the seller for some reason returned the money, it was not credited to the card, but remained in the PayPal service. It wasn’t possible to spend it everywhere, and I decided not to work with Russian Standard.

It is important that immediately after binding there was a . I didn’t immediately figure out that it was unprofitable, but then I changed it to the option from the bank.

Bottom line: I’m happy with the services, but it takes a long time to understand the nuances.

Cooler than Webmoney

Recently I was offered a part-time job at toloka.yandex.com, where there is no withdrawal to Webmoney. I started to think about whether to open a wallet on Yandex.Money or get used to the mysterious PayPal. I read the reviews about Yandex and decided not to get involved! I started to understand PayPal, and it began...

They asked me to confirm my email address, install a mobile application, link a card, and provide personal information. My head was spinning, so many demands! Plus, from the reviews I learned that after registration, $2 is charged from the card. "Deceivers!" - I thought... and decided to check. But the money was not withdrawn, on the contrary, they were transferred! After 4 days, about 20 kopecks appeared on the account, and to confirm I entered the amount in 2 windows. After linking, I was able to perform transactions!

I started transferring to the card, because I had saved up 1000 rubles. With a trembling hand, I clicked on “Withdraw funds” and prepared to wait for a long time. But the money arrived not after 5 days, but after 3 days. And without interest, as in Webmoney, that is, there was no need to share what you earned. Result: the money is on the card, safe and sound, but I prefer to cash out large amounts.

Slow, tricky, constant blocking

Andrey, September 06, 2016

It seems that Paypal employees are trying to create an impression of well-being with their reviews. But for me this is the worst option!

I played online, upgraded my account and decided to sell. I was interested in a guy from the USA, he suggested. In the past, I opened an account and scanned documents were not required. That’s why I agreed, because I used to buy, sell, withdraw, and manage my own money.

After receipt, the dollars were automatically converted into rubles, and it was clearly unprofitable. While I was sorting it out, I was blocked until I could provide documents to confirm my identity. I sent the scans and went to bed, and in the morning I called support: I managed to get authorized, but I couldn’t use the money!

After a new conversation with a nice girl, it turned out that “the system doesn’t trust me,” and for possible unlocking you need to go through several procedures. Again scans of the passport, confirmation of location with registration, everything for the second round! Then the operator offered to make a purchase for verification and hung up. But there was no result, I had to call again. As a result, they said that unlocking the account could take about a month. They refused to switch to the boss, talked about nothing for 30 minutes, no result. It's the 5th day, no progress.

Convenient, easy and fast

As a user, I pay attention to the convenience of shopping on eBay or in foreign and domestic stores. The most difficult part was registration, but all I needed was to strictly follow the instructions and be patient. For some reason, my card was not displayed in the service for a long time, although $1 was withdrawn from it immediately (later returned). I was unhappy because I registered to make a purchase, for which I had to wait 4 days due to delays. But the rest turned out to be easy!

When purchasing on eBay after clicking Buy it now you will be asked to choose the option with a card (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) or make a payment via PayPal by entering your login and password. It is easy to make a transfer on other platforms, just do not forget to set the conversion, otherwise you will lose at an unfavorable rate.

The impressions were generally good, there were no difficulties. True, I did not return the money from the seller and did not resort to the “Buyer Protection” system; I hope that I will not need it in the future.

“Thanks to” this system I fell for 2 scams:

  1. I ordered a camera from the USA, but instead the package contained a bag of sand. The open dispute was lost because the seller had confirmation of receipt of the goods.
  2. The second case is even more offensive! I was waiting for an order from Italy, but the package was lost. The dispute was won, the amount was returned, I found the item I needed elsewhere and made a purchase. But then the first package was delivered to me, which suddenly turned up. The seller tracked it using the tracking number and asked me to return the product, which I did. After that, he filed a complaint, and the system reviewed the results of the closed dispute! I was charged the purchase price and sent to the seller, so I lost the money and was left without the goods sent.

Another unpleasant thing happened to a friend who uses PayPal. The account was hacked and goods worth $400 were purchased, which he found out about after receiving an SMS about the debit. The friend immediately blocked the card, but the stolen money was not returned. Why complex registration if there is no reliability anyway?

Despite all the contradictory reviews, they provide an opportunity to assess weaknesses and take measures to avoid unpleasant situations. Individual shortcomings can be corrected by carefully studying the rules, and the number of problems will be reduced to a minimum!
