MasterCard in Belarus: everything you need to know. Sberbank contactless cards: pros and cons Master Card Pai Pass

Cards with contactless payment technology differ from regular ones in that with their help, payment for goods at the checkout can be made instantly, with one touch. All you have to do is bring the card to a special reader - the purchase has already been paid for! Fantastic? Not at all.

It’s just that such cards have a built-in chip and antenna, thanks to which payment information is transmitted to the terminal. This new product will undoubtedly please those for whom time is money. After all, now you don’t have to give the card to the cashier, and if the cost of a product or service is less than 1,000 rubles, you don’t need to sign a receipt or enter a PIN code either.

There are contactless cards with payWave and PayPass technologies.

Visa payWave and MasterCard PayPass: what's the difference?

Cards with payWave technology are cards of the Visa payment system, and cards with PayPass technology are cards of the MasterCard payment system. This is where the differences end, since the methods of using them are almost the same.

Both payment and credit contactless cards are issued.

How to use contactless cards?

You can make contactless payments in places where the Visa payWave or MasterCard PayPass logos are present. The purchase scheme is as follows:

  • First of all, check the entered payment amount;
  • Hold the contactless card close to the reader for a second;
  • The fact of payment will be confirmed by a sound signal and an inscription on the display, after which the terminal turns off (this eliminates the debiting of a double amount).

If the payment is more than 1000 rubles, then you additionally need to enter a PIN code or receive a receipt from the cashier for signature. But 1000 rubles is the limit for Russia. If you pay with a contactless card outside the Russian Federation, then the amount of the limit must be clarified with the cashier. In some countries, if you exceed a certain limit, you can only pay for your purchase by contact method. But this should not be scary, because both Visa payWave and MasterCard PayPass, in addition to the built-in antenna, have a chip and a magnetic stripe.

Contactless cards: pros and cons

Advantages:

— Record speed of payment transactions.

— No need to hand over your bank card to the cashier.

— You don’t have to enter a PIN code (up to 1000 rubles).

— Contactless cards are less likely to be subjected to mechanical stress and, accordingly, wear out less.

— It is especially convenient to pay with these cards where speed is important and the amounts are not very large: at gas stations, in cafes, on public transport.

— Can be used in regular ATMs or terminals.

— Accepted in more than 30 countries.

Flaws:

The main obstacle to the full use of Visa payWave and MasterCard PayPass cards in Russia is the small number of retail outlets ready to service them. Since contactless equipment is quite expensive, there is no rush to invest in it yet.

Many clients are also put off by the unknown in terms of security. Fraudsters, like no one else, always keep up with the times. However, the payment systems themselves claim that contactless payments are reliably protected.

Where can I get contactless plastic cards in Russia?

While contactless transactions are already gaining momentum abroad, in Russia there are still few banks issuing innovative cards.

PayPass technology allows the owner of a plastic card to pay for purchases contactlessly. You do not need to enter a PIN code, nor do you need to sign a receipt. The payment procedure in this way significantly saves time and protects the client’s account from erroneous payments and fraud. We will consider the features of PayPass technology and what it gives the client below.

The essence of technology

PayPass comes from the USA. Initially, contactless payment technology was used in fast food establishments, but after the largest banks in Canada and Japan joined the work, contactless payment terminals spread throughout the world. Today the technology is used in a number of major countries and throughout Europe.

In Russia, PayPass has been used since 2008 and works only with MasterCard and Visa. The cards were issued by the Moscow Industrial Bank. The main users of this “plastic” were students, for whom the “plastic” replaced both a wallet and a student ID.

Today, the technology is widespread in large cities, and cards are issued by Alfa-Bank, Russian Standard, Tinkoff Credit Systems and a number of other organizations. The use of “plastic” is especially convenient where you need to save time: in cafes and restaurants, airports, gas stations, etc.

On the front side of the instrument with PayPass there is a number of symbols: MasterCardPayPass and VisaPayWave. This makes it easy to distinguish such “plastic” from other types. The technology is not a connected service and its use requires the issuance of a separate card equipped with a chip.

The question often arises: “How to use?” The essence of the technology is that a chip with an antenna is embedded in plastic. It allows you to pay for a purchase by presenting your card to the terminal, without entering a PIN code. The terminal reads the information and transfers money from the account.

Possible purchase amount is up to 1,000 rubles. If the amount is greater, you must enter a PIN code. This is a condition for protecting funds. In addition, the technology will not allow you to pay twice, which is why the chip is turned off after payment is made.

If your wallet contains several cards with similar chips, then PayPass will respond to only one of them. For others, the procedure will be blocked. An employee of the issuing bank can explain why the blocking is being made. Often, after an accidental stop of account transactions, no further payments are made.

"Drink Pass" can be used abroad. At the same time, American Express is added to the two designated systems (Visa and MasterCard). There is only one condition for making payments - the bank that issued the “plastic” must have a certificate for accepting contactless payment.

Institutions working with technology

“Plastic”, compatible with contactless payment technology, can be credit or debit. Tariffs are comparable to regular ones, and a list of institutions where you can obtain such a service is located on the PayPass system website. Let's present a list of banks:

  • Promsvyazbank: “PSB-Platinum”, All Inclusive, “Supercard”;
  • Alfa-Bank: Aeroflot debit and credit cards of classic and gold levels;
  • “Russian Standard” - offers only credit plastic;
  • Sberbank: classic credit and debit Visa and MasterCard, Aeroflot, Platinum and Black Edition cards.

It’s worth mentioning separately about the “NFC-bank card Russian Standard”. The tool is inserted into a mobile phone and acts as a regular SIM card. Unlike other types, a mobile device is brought to the terminal.

To purchase plastic for contactless payment, you should contact the financial institution that issues such an instrument. The registration procedure in each bank is established individually, and the tariffs for use are indicated in the tariff plan. There are instant issuance cards and personalized “plastic”.

The registration procedure is as follows:

  • choosing a bank and submitting an application in person or online;
  • signing an account servicing agreement;
  • Receipt instantly or in 2-3 weeks.

The card can be issued free of charge if it is classic “plastic”. If the card is of the “Gold” (or Gold) level, then you will have to pay 1,000 or more rubles for the issue. In addition, there is a need to pay for annual maintenance. It is paid for any “plastic”.

Where can you pay with PayPass?

To pay using technology, you need to make a card deposit. You can top up your account at any terminal of the relevant bank, as well as through the cash desk. After this, payments will be available at any institution that has certain equipment.

Payment for goods and services by card with PayPass is possible only where terminals with similar functionality are installed. Most often, the system’s partners are large stores, restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations, subways and entertainment venues.

To clarify whether such payment is possible at a particular institution, you need to go to the system’s website, where information about all partners is located. In the search form you need to enter the city and category of the organization.

The technology has a number of advantages:

  • significant time savings;
  • a wide choice of payment items - using a phone, wallet, key fobs, etc.;
  • secure payments thanks to the Security Pay system.

Disadvantages include:

  • a small number of organizations working with PayPass on the Russian market;
  • the lack of prevalence of institutions with PayPass payment terminals;
  • frequent equipment failures.

Since PayPass is a testing technology, it is often impossible to solve a client’s problem urgently. The system's website contains hotline numbers. The number is also indicated on the back of the plastic.

Security and reliability of payments also raise big questions. Sellers claim that the funds are under the complete control of the client. Of course, the antenna located in the Pay Pass chip operates at a distance of 3-4 centimeters from the terminal, and the payment is made in 3-4 seconds. But when transferring money, you need to carefully follow the procedure, since today there are devices like Bluetooth that can easily connect to the payment and transfer money to another account. This procedure is simplified because you do not need to enter a PIN.

MasterCard is an international payment system that allows you to make payments in more than 200 countries around the world. MasterCard began its history back in 1966, when a group of Californian banks merged to form a single financial space. At that time, the name of the system was completely different - Interbank Card Association or ICA for short. The company acquired its current name only 13 years later, in 1979.

Today, about 30% of all payment cards in the world come from the MasterCard payment system. Mastercard is an intermediary between banks in different countries, allowing their clients to make payments not only within their country, but also abroad. This payment system is used by both individuals, private clients, and owners of small, medium and large businesses. The MasterCard payment system has more than 30 million points of acceptance of its cards, including in Belarus and other CIS countries.

The MasterCard payment system owns several trademarks: MasterCard Electronic, Maestro, Mondex and Cirrus. The company itself does not issue plastic cards; this issue is resolved by partner banks. It is the banks that set service tariffs, interest rates, payment commissions, etc.

As we have already found out, the payment cards themselves are issued by the issuing banks, and not by the MasterCard payment system. This means that a MasterCard card can be issued by any bank in Belarus, but the conditions for their use and service will be different (depending on the bank where you purchase this card).

You should not ignore the fact that the Mastercard payment system belongs to a foreign corporation: all your financial flows are controlled by “Big Brother”. In addition to assistance in making payment transactions outside the country, Mastercard can leave its clients without a livelihood at any time , which is what happened in Crimea at the end of 2014. and MasterCard announced the termination of cooperation with Russian banks in Crimea due to the introduction of US sanctions against the Russian Federation. Crimean citizens who store money on cards of these foreign payment systems are left without funds. What it was like for those who were currently abroad - one can only guess.

When opening a MasterCard card, remember this case, because today sanctions were introduced against Russia, and tomorrow MasterCard will decide to stop working with banks in Belarus. That is why our country has its own payment system - Belkart. If a foreign corporation represented by MasterCard refuses to cooperate with banks in Belarus, our citizens will still be able to pay for purchases in their country using cards from the national payment system Belkart.

MasterCard in Belarus

Cards of the MasterCard payment system are currently issued by all issuing banks in Belarus: Belarusbank, Belinvestbank, Belagroprombank, BPS-Sberbank, MTBank, Bank Moscow-Minsk, Belgazprombank, Bank BelVEB, Alfa-Bank, Belarusian People's Bank, Priorbank, Idea Bank, Home Credit Bank and Fransabank.

Several types of MasterCard payment cards are issued in Belarus: Standard, Gold, Platinum, Black Edition and Elite.

MasterCard Standard

MasterCard Platinum

MasterCard Black Edition

MasterCard Elite

PayPass is a contactless payment technology, i.e. You just need to attach your bank card to the reading terminal and your purchase will be paid for! You do not need to give the card to the cashier; you yourself monitor the correctness of the payment. Before paying, be sure to check the amount indicated on the terminal screen. If everything is ok, simply touch your MasterCard paypass card to the reader terminal and complete the purchase process.

If the purchase price exceeds 20BYN, the payment terminal will ask you to enter a PIN code or sign the receipt. You will be notified of the completion of the payment process by the sound signal produced by the reading terminal.

Currency MasterCard

The main payment currency of the MasterCard payment system is euro. This does not mean that the card currency can only be Euro. The card currency can be absolutely any, for example, Belarusian rubles, dollars, Russian rubles, etc. However, if you make a payment in a currency other than the card currency, then the conversion will be carried out as follows: card currency → euro → payment currency.

Let's give an example: you have a MasterCard card in Belarusian rubles, and you pay, for example, for an online purchase in dollars. In this case, your Belarusian rubles from the card are first converted into euros, and then the euros are converted into dollars, i.e. You will lose a small percentage on these transactions.

If the card currency does not differ from the payment currency, then only the transaction amount is debited from the account. For example, to pay for purchases in dollars, you can open a MasterCard card in dollars, in which case no conversion occurs.

MasterCard rate

There is no single rate at which currencies are converted from Mastercard cards. The conversion rate is set by the issuing bank that issued the card. So if you use a MasterCard from Belarusbank, then the card rate is set by Belarusbank.

MasterCard number

The MasterCard card number is 16 digits on the front of the plastic card, which are written four in a row. The card number is unique for each specific product, but does not contain any unique information about the user, i.e. the maximum that can be learned from this digital code is information about the bank that issued the card and under what program this card was issued.

However, you should not think that the card can only be used if you know the PIN code. Modern payments can be made on the Internet, and the card contains all the information to make this payment. Therefore, if you have lost your card or it has been stolen, immediately report this to the bank that services this card. Employees will block the account, which means that attackers will not be able to use your money.

MasterCard SecureCode

SecureCode is a unique secret code that is known only to you and the bank that issued this card, i.e. to the issuing bank. SecureCode will help make your online purchases as safe as possible, because... In addition to the data from the card itself, to make a payment you will need to enter a unique account access code.

In order to activate MasterCard SecureCode, you need to contact the bank that services your card. To make purchases in an online store with MasterCard SecureCode, you need to enter the card number, then the code itself in a special separate secure window and the purchase is paid!

You can enter SecureCode only in those stores where this system is connected. You can find out whether a store participates in this program by looking at its logo.

MasterCard moneysend

MasterCard moneysend is money transfers anywhere in the world to a bank card of the MasterCard or Maestro payment system. To make a transfer, you need to know its validity period.

You can send money using MasterCard moneysend in one of the ways convenient for you:

Through the website of the bank that issued you the MasterCard card;
Via ATM;
Using a self-service terminal;
At any branch of the issuing bank.

Payoneer MasterCard is a payment card of the American bank “Choice bank limited”, which is issued in close cooperation with the Webmoney payment system. Suitable for those who need to withdraw electronic money from a Webmoney, PayPal, Amazon and others wallet.

To be honest, today Payoneer MasterCard is not the most profitable payment card for withdrawing electronic earnings. You can top it up only from an electronic wallet, i.e. You cannot put cash on this card. Maintenance costs 8USD per year, however in the case of a formal certificate, i.e. an unverified account, the cost of servicing increases, as does the cost of all other services. In the case of non-cash payments by card, barbaric interest is charged - 1.8% when paying in American currency and 3% when paying in any other currency. You will also have to pay separately for card delivery, because... Choice bank limited is located in the USA. For more detailed information please visit the website www.payoneer.com .

How to top up MasterCard

You can top up your MasterCard card with cash at any branch of the bank that services this card or through self-service terminals.

Theft of money from cards has always been a common type of fraud. But with the advent of contactless payment cards, it has become even easier for criminals to steal other people's funds. If you are the owner of contactless Visa PayWave or MasterCard PayPass cards, then you are at risk when your money can be withdrawn from your account very quickly and unnoticed.

Contactless cards: convenience of payments and increased risks

Banks offered their clients new cards equipped with contactless payment technology - Visa PayWave and MasterCard PayPass. The purpose of their issuance is to facilitate payments and reduce the time spent on financial transactions. These cards are different in that there is no need to swipe them through the terminal. You just need to bring them to the reader and the money will be written off. There is no need to even take the card out of your wallet. When paying for goods or services worth up to 1000 rubles, you do not need to enter a PIN code. You just need to present the card to the reader. Paying with them has become fast and convenient.

But it is precisely the fact that money can be debited from a card remotely using a special device and without the need to enter a PIN code or sign, which has made them easy prey for scammers. The Zecurion company estimates that in the first quarter of 2016 alone, about 1 million rubles were stolen from such cards.

How does theft happen?

To withdraw money from a contactless payment card, a fraudster just needs to purchase or make his own special reading device and bring it closer to the victim at a distance of up to 20 cm. Even at this distance, the device reads the data from the card.

Contactless cards are equipped with special RFID chips, and devices that allow you to obtain information from them are called RFID readers. The fraudster just needs to bring it as close to the card as possible. So that the victim does not notice anything, thefts usually occur in crowded places - public transport, a market, a crowd of spectators at a concert, etc. The criminal simply places the device near the person's pockets or bag without him noticing. There is no need to even bring it too close - 10-20 cm is enough. A few seconds, and all the data is in his hands.

The criminal either uses them to make payments through online stores that do not require entering a password or CVV code. However, there is a restriction for contactless card holders - the transaction amount should not exceed 1000 rubles, only in this case there is no need to enter security data. But there are no restrictions on the number of transactions, so the fraudster can carry out several of them until he has used all the available funds on the victim’s card.

Also, some criminals produce “white cards” on which a magnetic strip is applied with the victim’s card data. Then they withdraw money from an ATM.

Some statistics

According to statements by the information security company Zecurion, more than 2 million rubles were stolen from contactless cards of Russian citizens in 2015. As the number of users of such cards increases, money thefts will correspondingly increase. Zecurion experts predict that at least 2.5 million rubles will be stolen in 2016; by 2017, this figure could reach 5 million rubles.

How to protect yourself

It is almost impossible for the owner of a contactless payment card to protect himself from a fraudster, since in the crowd in which the criminal operates, it is very difficult to notice him, especially considering the fact that he uses the reader secretly. Therefore, you can find out about the theft of money only after it has been written off from the card. But there are ways that help reduce the risk of theft of funds:

  1. The maximum amount that can be debited from the card without having to enter a PIN code is 1000 rubles. However, it is possible to write an application to the bank to reduce it. This will allow you to lose a smaller amount of money in case a thief manages to steal your card data.
  2. It is recommended that you enable SMS notification of any transactions made from the card. This will allow you to detect theft in time and block the card. Despite the fact that there is a limit of 1,000 rubles for conducting transactions with a contactless card, the fraudster can make several payments. By activating SMS notification, you will be able to find out about the theft of funds after the first transaction and prevent all the money from being written off from the card.
  3. Be careful and attentive in transport.

There are also wallets and cases on the market that claim to protect your card from being swiped, but no studies have been conducted on whether they can actually prevent theft or not. Therefore, there is no need to rush to buy them.

The active development of innovative technologies has also affected the banking sector. Plastic cards successfully replace the press of banknotes, and there is no need to calculate how much cash you need to take with you. Many citizens do not even know about the PayPass system: what it is, how to use the card, its options. A third of map users do not understand why the Wi-Fi sign is drawn on the map, as well as how the functionality itself works.

PayPass contactless payment technology is a special system that allows you to make payments of a certain denomination without a card. For this purpose, retail establishments are equipped with multifunctional reading devices for servicing such devices.

Here it is important to convey to the majority of the population the convenience, reliability, and ease of use of this option. Paypass contactless payment technology allows you to make payments with the seller of goods or services in a matter of seconds. In the future, this will pay off for the owners by increasing the market segment of loyal users.

The Pay Pass system began in 2003. Initially, the first copies were used only as test options. But already in 2005, mass production of this card product began on world markets and in 2008 they appeared in Russia.

The official representative of the technology is MasterCard.

This is a European company that issues all cards under the MasterCard brand. It is planned in the near future to introduce terminal coverage for servicing contactless payments throughout Europe, including Eastern Europe.

Potential owners of terminals with the function of reading information from microchips can be:

  • transport companies;
  • bistro;
  • school canteens;
  • fast food restaurants;
  • student cafes.

The ability to carry out settlement transactions instantly will significantly reduce queues in these organizations. This, in turn, will allow you to serve more customers and increase your daily profit. That is why it is worth investing once in purchasing readers for Pay Pass devices.

Paypass technology is being actively introduced into society

Devices that provide contactless payments

A card with the PayPass function is not very different in appearance from a regular plastic card. A special chip built into the card is responsible for providing the functionality. The retailer is obliged to notify customers about the availability of terminals for servicing Pay Pass devices. This is done by placing a special sticker next to the cash registers for customers.

In addition to cards, contactless payment technology is applicable to key fobs, mobile phones, bracelets, and watches.

NFC technology

The chip behind the fast payment device is based on the development of short-range information exchange technology. Such communication is carried out at high frequencies and is called near field communication (NFC).

This is what explains how the calculation system works when a high-frequency signal is applied to the Paypass device.

In addition to the chip, special stickers are also produced that have the same functions. It is convenient to stick it on the item that is most convenient for the client to use.

In the near future, progressive customers will be able to make payments using their mobile phones. The proper level of security is ensured thanks to the EMV system - Europay, MasterCard, Visa, as well as the MDES service - MasterCard Digital Enablement Service. Let's look at them in more detail:

  • APPLE PAY- is already operating successfully, owners of mobile phones of this brand have the opportunity to make payments to the cashier by bringing the device to the terminal. At the same time, you need to touch the Touch ID scanner;
  • SAMSUNG PAY– not yet available for all models, the innovation is mainly built into new models.
  • ANDROID PAY– is under development.

NFC technology is also used for large-scale public events. To identify event participants, they are provided with bracelets with built-in chips. Passing through the turnstiles, the participant registers quickly and conveniently.

A bank card with the Paypass system is issued in the standard way

Registration of a banking product with the PayPass function

Many clients are puzzled by the question of how to connect paypass. You don't need to make any special efforts for this. It is enough to contact a specialist servicing individuals at a banking institution. Not all banks are yet ready to provide such a service as a card with a contactless reading function.

Before going to the bank to apply for a Pay Pass card, it’s a good idea to find out under what conditions this option is provided. This will avoid many misunderstandings in future maintenance.

A package of documents will be required as for a regular bank card:

  • client application form;
  • passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
  • a special digital code issued by the tax office.

If this is your first application to a financial institution, you will need to provide the originals of all necessary documents. However, if the client is already served by the bank, then no additional documents will be required.

So far, not all banks are able to offer such a service to their clients. Below in the table we consider the main tariffs for the service:

Name of financial institution

Type of banking product PayPass Issue cost

Maintenance per year

Sberbank

classic debit card for free

750 rubles in the first year, 450 in subsequent years

Raiffeisenbank

my alpha for free

699 rubles per year

Alfa Bank

Buy and Fly card not charged

3000 rubles

Moscow Industrial Bank

Fresh card WORLD there is no issue fee

99 rubles per month

Tinkoff

S7 - Tinkoff there is no issue fee

1890 rubles per year

Basically, there is no separate fee for PayPass functionality; the cost of annual service already includes the release of a special chip. You can order a card without even leaving your home by filling out an application on the website of a financial company. In large cities, many banks can provide a mobile banker for home service. It will take about two business weeks to produce a personalized card.

Payment with a card with a chip is considered more secure compared to a magnetic stripe

Safety in use

Many service owners are interested in how to use the functionality safely, since fraudulent transactions are not uncommon these days.

In order to protect customers from downloading funds from a contactless card, a limit without a PIN code has been set - no more than 100 rubles per transaction.

Therefore, if you discover that your card is lost or stolen, it is important to block your account immediately. Most clients immediately receive an SMS after making a card payment indicating that resources have been debited from the card. Thanks to this, other people's spending on the card can be noticed quickly. It is strictly prohibited to transfer the card itself to third parties.

The security of the operations themselves today is at the proper level:

  1. The data used in calculations is minimal, so hackers cannot get the desired information for fraud.
  2. The duration of a financial transaction is also reduced to a minimum and does not allow unauthorized persons to intercept the necessary statements.
  3. Immediately after servicing the client, the terminal stops working without saving data.
  4. Each transaction is encrypted and cannot be used multiple times in a row.

It should be remembered that any chipped items should not be stored near televisions, computers and any other equipment that emits frequency vibrations. So the device quickly demagnetizes, ceasing to function. In most cases, re-issuing a card will cost a fee, since its validity has not yet expired.

How to cancel the service

There are situations when a client decides to stop using the Paypass service. In this case, there is a need for a correct procedure for disabling the functionality. A specialist from a banking institution will advise you correctly on how to disable the service.

When it is not possible to visit the company’s office in person, you can disable the service through your personal account. Some banks also provide customer service by telephone. To do this, you need to call the bank’s hotline, following further instructions from a specialist to confirm your intention.

The Paypass system has more pros than cons

Advantages and disadvantages of the service

Like any progressive product, the PayPass option has both positive and negative qualities. Each client makes an individual decision about the benefits of such a service. Let's look at the main advantages:

  1. Lightning-fast speed of settlements with buyers of goods and services in trading enterprises.
  2. No need to contact the cashier to make a payment; This option significantly shortens the payment procedure itself, because sometimes cashiers delay terminal payment due to their incompetence.
  3. There is no need to enter a secret code on the terminal.
  4. Attractive appearance of the card due to less mechanical susceptibility.
  5. Recently, PayPass is often used by parents to control their child’s spending at school. In this case, the contactless card is issued as an additional card to the parent’s main account. Management occurs only from the main account, and the account owner receives an SMS report for each expense.

Among the shortcomings, the limited number of businesses that use terminals to accept contactless payment devices for purchases remains a global problem. This equipment is expensive, so not every owner can afford to install this innovation.

In modern society, paying by card is considered a fairly routine procedure. However, contactless payments have not yet acquired everyday status. The confidence of the population has not yet increased enough to massively use the Paypass service for daily payments in trade organizations.

Progress does not stand still, so the popularity of the service is slowly but surely gaining its circle of admirers. Citizens who keep up with the times when paying for groceries in supermarkets do not want to spend a long time at the checkout. Understanding the calculation process in the Pai Pass system, that it is not only convenient, but also fast, users significantly save their time.
